Sarah’s journey back into payroll

Pattern circle

Sarah's goal was clear; she wanted to develop new skills so she could progress in her career and improve her income. To help her get there, she worked with one of our Realising Potential Specialists (RPS) to create a Personal Success Plan and explore the steps she needed to take to achieve her ambitions.

Although Sarah currently works in a school, she had previously worked in payroll. After having children, she realised this was a career path she wanted to return to. She was keen to build her confidence, strengthen her CV and apply for roles that offered better long‑term prospects.

With support from her RPS, Sarah researched online and in‑person courses that would fit around her current job and help her gain a recognised qualification. She decided to enrol on the IPPE Payroll Technician Certificate, an online course delivered by the Chartered Institute of Payroll Professionals.

The cost of the course was a barrier, but Sarah and her RPS worked together to apply for funding through the Aspiration Pot — a funding initiative designed to help individuals pursue personal and professional development goals. . The application was successful, enabling Sarah to enrol on the course.

Thanks to this support, Sarah has now passed the course and gained her Payroll Technician Certificate. This is a fantastic achievement and has opened up new opportunities for her to apply for higher‑paid roles and take the next step in her career.
