Getting started in primary education

Pattern circle

Olivia is a single mum and was ready to get back into work after a few years of being at home raising her children. Olivia was interested in pursuing a career within primary education, but she didn't know where to start and she felt she didn't have the experience to apply for school-based roles. This is when Olivia decided to reach out to our Community Potential Specialists for some extra support!

Our Community Potential Specialist helped Olivia with her chosen career path by funding a laptop and online childcare courses that would not only give her some basic skills and a knowledge of childcare, but would also look great on her CV.

The next step was for Olivia to find a volunteer placement in a primary school to gain hands-on experience. Olivia found an opportunity and we were thrilled to help her by acting as a personal reference. The volunteer placement gave Olivia experience in helping with day-to-day tasks, reading to children, and overseeing them during play times.

After a few months of volunteering and increasing her experience, a role became available at the school as a Learning Assistant. Olivia applied and was offered the job after a successful interview!

Olivia says:

"It’s great and the job helps me to work around my children and school holidays. The next step would be to obtain my Level 2 qualification, which I hope to be able to do at some point.”
